Waiting for a train one day after work, we were shocked to see a train on the adjacent line sinking into the ground because water erosion has washed away the sub-base under the ballast. We realised that the old techniques like manual inspection or ground penetrating radar were inadequate and inefficient - What happens when something occurs to the line a day or two after the last inspection?
